Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
-
How is this programme different from other Chinese enrichment classes?Unlike traditional play-based Chinese classes for 2 to 3 year-olds, we introduce character recognition (识å—) early using graded reading techniques. This helps toddlers develop a strong foundation for literacy, making Chinese reading more natural as they grow. In general, we prioritise developing the love for Chinese reading, as we believe it has a more lasting impact and that academic learning goals will follow naturally too.
-
At what age can my child start? Our program is designed for toddlers aged 2 years old and up, making it one of the earliest Chinese literacy programs available in Singapore.
-
Is 2 years old too young to start learning Chinese characters? Not at all! Research shows that toddlers have an incredible ability to absorb language, and early exposure to character recognition helps build long-term literacy skills. Rest assured there will be age-appropriate methods to introduce them Chinese characters in different fun and engaging ways. Our teaching philosophy is make learning natural and enjoyable.
-
How does the programme teach character recognition? We use a combination of graded reading (分级阅读), storytelling, and interactive games to help toddlers recognize and remember Chinese characters in a fun and engaging way.
-
Will my child be learning Hanyu Pinyin? No, we focus on character recognition (识å—) first, as young children learn best in a whole-word context rather than phonetic systems like Pinyin.
-
Can I choose to accompany my child in class? We strongly encourage children to attend the class on their own, as this helps them build independence and focus while learning in a small-group setting.
-
Will there be homework or home practice? While we don’t assign formal homework, we provide home learning resources so parents can reinforce learning through simple activities and bedtime reading.
-
How should I supplement my child’s learning at home?We offer home learning resources that include reading activities, storytelling techniques, and character recognition games, making it easy for parents to reinforce learning in a stress-free way.
-
Should I buy the graded reader? We highly recommend purchasing a set for home reinforcement, as it allows your child to revisit stories at their own pace. However, your child will also enjoy and engage with these books during class through interactive storytelling.
